Why Have I Never Used Skype?

Why in the world have I never tried out Skype? I’ve been aware of it for a long time, but tonight I plugged in for the first time and talked to someone on the other side of the world.
For some reason, I was under the impression that there was a special phone you had to have to use the service. I think I saw a phone with a Skype logo on the shelf at Wal-Mart in the computer accessories, and just assumed that you had to have that…..as embarrassing as it is. Well, I found out tonight that all you need is a mic and speakers, and you’re good to go. I had an old pair of headphones in one of my closets with an attached microphone, and it worked perfectly. I was amazed. The headset I have probably isn’t worth a couple of bucks. So I’ve found one of my new favorite web apps!

To be quite honest, I’ve never tried it out before either. I’m not quite sure why, but its just something that never really interested me for some reason.
I may have to go ahead and give a try though and see what I think.
Yes, I love Skype. It’s great for conference calls especially.
Anthony,
I’m not sure who the comment above is, but its not me.
Clarke
Clarke,
According to the email address and website address left, it was Jake from JateC, who comes here often. I’m not sure what happened, but I’m sure he didn’t type your name in. Some sort of malfunction I suppose. Anyway, it’s fixed, and I offer my apologies.
As for Skype, I hope to get to use it quite a bit in the future. I’ve mentioned it to several contacts that I have locally, and none of them have ever used it. Maybe I wasn’t the only one afterall.
Skype is great for conference calls, especially with video.
I’ve used it for that, but never for just chatting … I know if I put it on my computer I’d never get any work done.
I know what you mean, Shane. I’m not really a “chat” person either, but I was really surprised at the clarity…….not sure why.
I think the value for someone working online, is the ability to discuss things much faster. You could have a quick conversation, or email back and forth all day.
Not problem at all. I just wasn’t sure exactly what was going on or if someone was trying to use my name to get their comment approved or what.
I knew you weren’t ticked off or anything, but even so, I apologize. I’m not sure what could have caused it. I’m glad you pointed it out to me.
I love Skype
a lot cheaper than using my cell phone.
Oh and you can add me to your contact list also (skype button on my about page on SWR)
Cool, Jon. I’ll give you a call sometime.
I’ve wanted to use Skype myself, but I don’t think my computer could handle it. It’s been slowly dying on me.
Hi there Jenny, I’m not positive, but I don’t think it takes a great deal of computer resources, and it really is a neat tool.
I use msn messenger and is OK. The headphone Skype for sale in Wal-Mart is horrible. Has noise, put a lot of pressure on your ears… You do better buying another for 5 dollars more.
Thanks for the little push. I’ve been meaning to try it for years. Guess now is the time!
Skype is really great.
Kind of poll question: which one do you think is the best, (concerning the quality of audio): Skype or Yahoo Messenger with voice ?
Well, personally I’ve never used Yahoo Messenger, so I don’t know. I will say however, that I now use Skype almost daily, and have been very pleased!
I’m using Skype right now.
I use it to do crosswords with people from other countries. =\
I thought the same thing for a while. I believe Vonage is a service that requires such phones, but I can’t be sure right now.
I had it for a while but only used the messanger part of it. I never had the need to talk to someone on the other side of the world by phone.
Yep Skype is great! Nice piece of technology
