Free Advice – Worth the Price?

I just read What Bothers You Online?, and Joshua Dorkin had me shaking my head in complete agreement! He makes a list of all the “trends” online that are annoying, including people who give advice on subjects they know nothing about……

Make Money Online

The first online annoyance that he listed was all the blogs about “making money online”. I’ve stumbled onto quite a few of these myself. Now obviously, there are real experts at this, but there are TONS of blogs about the subject, and I would guess that the far majority of them have never made one cent! I think a good way to tell is if the site is about nothing but online marketing and making money, yet their advertisement-covered-site has no comments and very few subscribers………I would say that’s a pretty good sign.

I guess my headline could be a little mis-leading. There are some great resources online that won’t cost you anything, but most of the time it’s easy to spot the real thing.

Hey! Scary how much BS goes on out there, huh? I’m glad you liked my post. I just get crazy when I see all the shuckters offering help to others when they have no idea what they are talking about.

Yeah, I especially see a lot of these sites on Blogger. I guess because it’s so easy to set up a site and they allow advertising…….that there’s tons of spam.

Hey Joshua and Anthony! I agree man, there’s so many blogs on blogger about “making money online” it’s not even funny, a lot of them are updated monthly… sure there are a lot of “money making blogs” on blogger, but honestly if someone is really making money, why not switch to a hosting package and install wordpress? :)
    Off to read Joshs’ post!
    Take care!

And thanx a bunch for the mention Anthony! :)

I usually stay away from Blogspot sites.

You always have to doublecheck the info you’re getting online. I have a bunch of pages listed as supplemental in Google. All the solutions I found said to modify the robots.txt file which didn’t seem like the best solution.

So I checked the robots files on some big sites and they didn’t have the recommended changes. Instead I modified my theme a bit to only show excerpts of posts when viewed in Categories and Dated Archives. We’ll see what that does.

But yeah, you gotta verify. After a while you get to know who has good info and who’s just farting in the wind. :)

“I usually stay away from Blogspot sites.”

Unfortunately for some people, Blogger/Blogspot is getting a reputation for spammy sites. I’m usually a big fan of all things Google, but this is one service that I don’t care for.

When it comes to SEO and modifying code, I agree, it’s best to stick with “trusted” sources.

It is quite funny when you see these sites on blogger accounts. Definitely gets me going! FYI guys, I did a post yesterday that continues where this one leaves off. Thought you might want to enjoy the rest!
