I agree 100%, too many designers flood a page with too many buttons and direction. I tell ya the first thing a person does is leave when they can't figure out the nav in under 30 seconds.

I think you can still have "impressing" graphics with good thought out navigation at the same time and having the nav on one side of your page is a great move.

Kim,
Thanks for the comment. The categories you mentioned would definitely be a great start. Most of the work I've done so far, has been re-designing existing blogs.

"research months before before we ever design"

Months? Wow, you really do some homework. Your website design is extremely nice by the way. Thanks again for the comment.

There are several usability-related issues, methods, and procedures that require careful consideration when planning, designing, developing, and testing websites. For my agency, I have identified several major categories of website usability performance. They include:
Marketing, Design, Navigation, Page Layout, Site Content, and Site Features/Technology. I also use these categories for site evaluations and competitive analysis documents to help the client understand the strategic interactive marketing plans and research months before before we ever design an interface in Photoshop.

PS. Just found the blog today and will be back to see more!

Paulo, Probably the best example I can think of which which is easy to navigate and also includes multimedia communication would be Freelance Switch.
